Introduction to SmartSchool

The SmartSchool education model is an interactive academic program that incorporates iPad technologies to enhance the methods through which students can access, integrate and interact with information throughout their education. The educational applications the iPad offers will help bring lesson plans to life with its unlimited creative opportunities. The SmartSchool program was created in partnership with Apple and OmniComp.

Why SmartSchool

To continue providing the highest standard of education, we must consistently challenge ourselves and inspire our teachers to design highly effective, engaging academic programs that utilize innovative technologies like the iPad.

Through interactive instructional content including textbooks and educational and creative applications, students will engage in a dynamic learning experience that outpaces the traditional model of schooling. In today’s connected world, it is only fitting that students are exposed to technologies and platforms that can support their academic growth and prepare them for the future at a young age.

How it works

  • Each school’s network infrastructure was upgraded to include an enterprise firewall security appliance, a robust Internet connection and a secure wireless network capable of sustaining a high-density deployment of iPads and computers.
  • During a Back-to-School Night Town Hall Meeting, parents and students will review each school’s Acceptable Use Policy and iPad Acceptance Policy.
  • Every student will receive an iPad along with an Apple ID, which will be linked directly to a new school email address.
  • Mobile device management will ensure device and application control, compliance and safe browsing.
  • Please reference the FAQ below for more details.

Breadth of program

Apple and OmniComp will work closely with each school to provide appropriate applications and programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

We encourage questions and a two-way dialogue about SmartSchool. We are preparing our children to be leaders in the world by teaching them to responsibly embrace and intelligently leverage technology. If there is a question not addressed below, please contact office@koheletfoundation.org for more information.

  • Why is the Kohelet Foundation implementing the SmartSchool Program?
To provide the highest standard of education, we must consistently challenge ourselves, pushing our teachers to design highly effective and engaging academic programs that utilize innovative technologies like the iPad to effectively prepare our children to be successful leaders in this increasingly tech-savvy world.
  • It’s a great toy, but how will it benefit the education of my child?
Used properly and with respect, the iPad has the capability to transform the education of our students. As good stewards of technology, we are committed to enhancements that are truly meaningful, while also reinforcing strong safety parameters to protect the personal growth of our children.
  • The ability to go on and surf the Internet holds a lot of danger. Will there be restrictions in place?
The default Safari browser on each iPad will be disabled and replaced by a safe browser integrated and managed by Barracuda Web Security Flex – a cloud-based Web filtering and security service that quickly gives administrators all the information and policy enforcement tools needed to isolate users from Internet threats, conserve network bandwidth and filter content for compliance and productivity.
  • What happens if this device is used inappropriately?
There is a mobile device management solution in place that will allow for central management of all iPads according to each school’s preferences. It will also perform asset management, which means each iPad is entered into a database and monitored closely. Policy-based controls can be configured, applied and activated by grade or security group. Suspicious activity would lock the iPad and raise a red flag in the database, notifying the helpdesk and school administration. Each school will act accordingly based on its respective guidelines.
  • What types of programs will be on the iPad?
Apple and OmniComp will work closely with each school to provide appropriate applications and programs.
  • Will the use of the iPad interfere with my child’s Judaic studies?
Interactive learning allows for the ability to drive and provide the most rigorous and academic programs in both secular and Judaic studies. The iPad serves as a tool to provide access to a rich world of Jewish resources.
  • How will my child be engaged in the classroom if he is using the iPad?
We challenge ourselves to design innovative and engaging academic programs that prepare our children to be responsible with technology and intelligently prepared for the world ahead. With the use of iPad technology, what our students will be able to explore, discover and uncover is endless.
